SmCo permanent magnets
Samarium magnets, i.e. SmCo based magnets, also belong to the group of rare-earth magnets. Compared to neodymium magnets, they show a lower value of the maximum energy product, approximately 250 kJ/m3. Therefore, they are magnetically weaker. However, they are corrosion resistant, they can work at temperatures up to 300°C and with the increasing temperature their magnetic parameters go down, considerably more slowly than in neodymium magnets. The Curie temperature is approximately 700°C. Thermally, this kind of magnet can be demagnetized only when being heated to a temperature above 800˚C.
Samarium magnets are mainly used in products where high corrosion resistance, high operating temperature, and a low level of the temperature influence on the output parameters are required. These can comprise, for example, special electric motors, magnetic couplings and various types of sensors.
